Personally Identifiable Information (PII) – Even the ‘Most Trusted’ Companies Are Failing Us!

| | Business Development Director, SEEBURGER

Most-TrustedWARNING – It’s not just Mom-and-Pop shops, or the mid-size corporates that struggle to comply with Personally Identifiable Information (PII) directives / legislation, e.g. GDPR, PCI etc. Some of the ‘most trusted’ companies and government agencies across the world are failing us by not protecting our PII.

Gross negligence with Personally Identifiable Information

Both of the examples that follow are cited from the relocation of domicile from one country to another – a process that involves the exchange of highly sensitive PII. Firstly, a major top 10 bank thought it was acceptable to send bank account numbers, sort codes, address information etc. using regular e-mail that was un-encrypted. Secondly, the Revenue / Tax agency of a major G7 country insisted that it was OK for scans of a passport scans and driver’s license as well as address information etc. to be shared again using regular e-mail that was un-encrypted.
We live in times where we are now more likely to have our PII digitally stolen and cloned, rather than our wallets / purses being pickpocketed. Sadly, identify theft is rife within modern day society, and the largest banks and the most established of government agencies continue to behave irresponsibly in the fight to deter it. Shame on them.

Managed File Transfer Solutions – the right way to address these problems

It is inconceivable to think that the office of the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the ‘most trusted’ companies and government agencies such as these are not being held accountable for gross negligence. Why-oh-why have they not invested in a Managed File Transfer (MFT) solution to address these problems?

If you are reading this and happen to work for a corporation or agency that is not taking appropriate steps to protect peoples’ personal data, we encourage you to pick-up the phone – if not to us then to any number of MFT providers out there who can help you achieve PII compliance.
