From April 29- May 2 2018, “payments experts” from all over the United States got together at the NACHA Faster Payments 2018 event in San Diego to discuss trends, share experiences and practical implementations.
The world has embraced “instant“ with new real-time payment schemes rolling out around North America and the rest of the world. The way money moves is undergoing radical change globally. In an increasingly digital world, financial institutions, regulators, service providers, corporates and their customers expect better and faster services to move monies efficiently and securely in real-time, and current payment infrastructures struggle to meet these needs.
During the NACHA PAYMENTS event in San Diego there were many interesting workshops, presentations, discussions and demonstrations where various type of solutions and best practices were discussed, which led to a few thoughts:
Is the payment industry going through an evolution or a revolution?
Blockchain is obviously more than just a hype, but when and how will the payment industry adopt it? When can we clearly see the business value?
Is everyone ready to standardize around ISO 20022? How much is the investment and is there an ROI?
When will we get “industry standards” around APIs? Can API and ISO 20022 be combined, and if so, how?
There are many opinions to the above questions, shared by industry experts based on their experience, industry requirements and regulations. Amongst all the disagreements and uncertainty, one common goal that everyone wants to achieve is faster payments in real time. Every institution is working on modernizing their application infrastructure to get ready for the future.
